eXHIBITION 2 [FINALE]
At last!
We're finally here. The finale! I'm so excited to wrap this up, but also very sad that this is the end. I've enjoyed hosting this contest so, so much,
and I know you will all go with a bang.
It's time to decide the winner of eXHIBITION2! Who will join Jonesi as the second person to run through the finish line? It's time to
take all that you've learned, look at every piece of advice we've given you, and apply it.
The last piece of advice I can give you is this: take your time, think, and really flush out your ideas. Make these your best pictures
ever.

For this finale, you will be doing TWO pictures. Both of them must be completed by pre-determined dates that I will assign (scroll down).
Part One will account for 40% of your final score.
You will be doing very simple portraits, but with a very... futuristic twist. Your model will be a robot!
Make sure you take lighting into consideration. Contrast is up to you, so you can really play with intensity and tone. Tell your own story.
GUIDELINES:
-The shot will be in black & white.
-Front on view, not 3/4 or profile, but front on.
-Bust up, or shoulders up.
-The amount of robot-ness is up to you. WE MUST BE ABLE TO SEE YOUR SIM, but you can go all out with metal plates and what not. We just need to see a
person under there.
-Expression should be almost blank, almost contemplative. We do not want to see any severe expression or emotion.
-size, 600 width, 800 height.
-plain, silver or gray gradient background.

Part Two will account for 60% of your final score.
At eXHIBITION we're making a little but of tradition for the finale. For Part Two, you'll be doing a very artistic, horror-movie-esque shot, a vixen
trapped in a world filled with skulls, and other strange things that would cause you to scream. You get the idea. Look at the examples.
What is unique about this picture is this, as it was last cycle:
YOU WILL BE CREATING THE BACKGROUND.
You will be able to draw it, construct it, whatever you want, but it has to be YOURS.
This makes for incredible creative freedom. We expect your picture to be creative, exciting, and interesting.
GUIDELINES:
-Your model must be a female. Think of the beautiful blonde stuck in a trippy graveyard and is attacked by the undead. Think sassy damsel in distress,
but sexed up.
-Your background does NOT have to be realistic! Think of these great old-time hollywood horror movies, or old cartoons. This should almost look
vintage, no advanced technology or futuristic settings. Think 'The Blob!'\
-The amount of action is up to you. The setting is up to you. IT'S ALL UP TO YOU (including size). So really think creatively.
-lighting is VERY important!
The background must be completed FIRST!
You must do your background first and hand it in by:
June 10, 2010
The final photo is due
June 19th. 2010

Pic 1
Am afraid I'm just not feeling the first picture from you Kaitlyn. The face is good and I love the shading on the face but the rest, for me is a bit
up in the air. I like the cog detailing on the shoulder and face and I also really like the wiring in the arm but it finishes strangely...like a
gradient. I feel a more obvious finish between skin and robot would have matched the crispness of the cogs. I'm really not sure what is going on with
the arm/shoulder behind the wired arm and am not keen on the bust area either, it all looks quite blurred in comparison with the other parts. The
contrast is really good but I feel the face and the one arm overpower the rest of the picture.
Pic 2
This is sooo much better! The background is fabulous! I love the dark sky, the trees and the gravestone...there's some sort of pattern overlay too
which is really effective. The pose is great although a little "modelly", it could have been a little more effective if the skeleton was grabbing at
the lower part of the leg. The shading is great, love the dirt on her skin, really makes her a part of the picture and I like that you used blonde
hair as it makes her stand out from the darkness and creepiness of the background. The leaning arm is coming up a little short for me, the upper arm
should be a bit longer I feel but other than that, you did a wicked job.

[part one]
I think you nailed this. I love the very simple pose of your robot model, it's so minimal and quick, but also adds dimension to the entire thing by
putting the hand in front of the face. The contrast is incredible, you have a lot of very light lights next to dark darks, making my eye go
everywhere, which is great compositionally. I think the neck is way too thin and maybe too curved, because it's making the head look gigantic. I think
also there's a disconnect between what you pasted in and what was part of the sim originally. The gears of the right shoulder and arm are very crisp
in their textures and very clear, while the outfit is very pixelated and dull. The shadows on the hand are also a bit too blurred to justify the
clarity (and overall, the greater contrast) in the gears, and it's a bit harder to look away from them compared to everything else. The wires on her
left forearm also look very pasted, there's not enough shape of a shadow where the skin overlaps, so they look a bit misplaced. I think that this
isn't your best picture, maybe one of your weaker ones, but it's also a very GOOD picture, which says a lot about your body of work.
[part two]
Now THIS. Well, this. I adore this. I don't know which I like more in terms of colour, your doll picture or this picture. The colours in this BRING
IT, they are SO phenomenal. They're all so cold, even the blonde hair, and it makes for a very spooky, chilly, but CRISP picture. Everything is so
clear, like you know on a cold winter day, how crisp everything is? That's this picture. You did wonders with the background, I like the texture
pattern you put over some parts, it adds an illustrative look to this, and your model is divine. Proportionally, this is flawless, and the shading is
really a step forward because of how clean it is. There's no strange lines about, and it's all polished. I see a slight problem with the hand
clutching the ground, below the forefinger looks very light, whereas shadows should completely darken it, but compared to everything, it's a small,
slight problem. This is an almost flawless picture, and I love the wit and the charm you gave it, a very different approach from everyone else. You
REALLY did the ROUND justice, you LISTENED to what I had to say. I said you should do a MOVIE STYLE horror shot, and you really did it. You're golden,
this is amazing.

Wow this picture is briljant! You really make a fantastic robot. I love the way you posed her arm and hand, it really makes this picture very
interesting. You’ve added so many details such as the toothed wheels which look amazing. Her hairstyle is nicely picked as well. I only see a little
off point: that you’ve seemed to lost the detailing on her outfit and skin above her breast. Her one arm with the toothed wheels looks very sharp and
detailed but the outfit looks more blurred. But that’s only a tiny minus. Overall I’d say you did an outstanding job as always. I really get the robot
feeling here and you’ve done very well.
I love the background and the interaction between the skeleton and your model. It gives me a scary movie effect: laughing with horror. Just seeing how
she’s trying to hold up her dress is hilarious. Like I mentioned before I love the background, the textures you used on it really makes it something
special to look at. The shading looks nice but there are some more blurry areas on her legs. And she looks like she’s almost laughing instead of
looking horrified. However if that’s the whole point with the picture being very funny, it’s not such a bad thing. Overall I really like this picture
and I think you did great this finale.

I really like your first picture Katie. It's really simple but wuite effective. The bare chest and the subtle expression give the picture a sense of
vunerability which I suppose in this instance isn't good as it's supposed to be emotionless but anyhow I think it works. The robot elements are very
simple, maybe too simple but it still works really well. The hair is great and I like the lighting and the shading too. The wires add a nice touch and
make the picture more rounded on the whole rather than just a simple headshot.
Pic2
The background is really good here, I love in game backgrounds and this really fits the scene.
I love the pose of the female, she shading on her body is great, the legs are amazing! What I don't get is what is happening? The vampire looks
really happy and is approaching her but she's already been bitten. I would have liked to have seen her being approached initially..the terror at what
was to come...

Oh my lord. Katie, this is such a fantastic picture. First and foremost, I think you brought a really mystical attitude to this that I could have
never foreseen. It's not industrial or mechanical like Kaitlyn's and Vero's, it's strange and kind of creepy! It's super amazing! I ADORE how your
robot model glows a little, how she has this totally glazed look, but the eyes are on FIRE, they breathe machine, the way they're lit and the lights
on them. I like the totally static pose, there are no limbs, it's simple and classic. The wires coming out of her back really help fill up the frame,
and the robot details are simple, but effective. I think the black lines could use some depth, like some slight blurring as the came into higher
relief, or the squares on her left shoulder some shadows. I LOVE the panel on her right arm, I think it's done so well, and the neck and chest
crystals really help with the shinyness of everything. One of your best pictures to date, well done.
[part two]
I love the composition and idea of your best, but I think it lacks in drama. I think the technical execution (esp. shading) looks amazing, the girl
looks phenomenal, but I think you could have amped this up times ten with some better LIGHTING. There's this glow coming from behind the sofa to the
left that really gives you a perfect opportunity to make this so much more dramatic. I think the light filtering from behind the girl in a much more
contrast-y way would have sent this over the moon. Right now, there is not enough contrast to draw your eyes immediatly to the figures, which is where
the focus should really be. The background is much more interesting, a real problem. You could have lens blurred the background a little even, just to
put some more emphasis on the models, but right now they're blending in and out of mind. There's no doubt that this is a good picture, but it isn't
thought out well enough in terms of contrast to make it INTERESTING.

Now this is something totally different than the others and I love it! You’ve really thought out of the box here. Even though there’s not much
expression allowed, I get such a strong feeling from her eyes. (Which are wonderfully detailed and gorgeous!) I really love how you got to keep her so
human looking and still give her the robot feel with those tiny details. Your shading is spot-on and I can’t really say anything bad about this
picture. Great job Katie!
Hmm you’ve let me a bit down on this part Katie. I think you’ve definitly got the point of this picture. With all the old objects in the room and the
vampire given it the horror effect. But even though I love your background, it’s really distracting me from your model. I don’t really feel that she’s
the focus of this picture. And her expression is totally lacking. I wish you had chosen for a more active pose instead of just leaning against a sofa.
Also a better lighting scheme would have put the focus more on your model. The whole room is just so bright. You’ve got candles there! That could have
given this whole picture a more mysterious mood with some interesting shading. I just can’t help but scan everywhere on this picture instead of
letting my eyes rest on your model. But technically this is a great picture, the shading is very well executed. All the good elements are present it
just needed that little extra touch!

This is really not robotic enough for me. It could almost be a stewardess with the headpiece and the hand gestures. What really lets it down is the
t-shirt the sim is wearing. It's blurry and not slightly robotic looking. You could have done a lot more with this round, especially with your
techinicl skill and shading. The shading is good, I like the shadows from the hands and the blankness of the face, I just feel the robotic touches
weren't enough and the body/t-shirt needed a major overhaul.
Pic2
My favourite of the final! Love it!! The face and knife in the distance is just horrific, it scares me just looking at it!! The perspective is great
and the blood splattered walls are great. Am glad you added the shackles to the wall too. Love the shading on the sim, the bloof and tears look
fabulous! Love the hair too. The pose/position works really well with the background. What could have made this picture better for me is more terror
in the expression. Although she looks scared you could have took it further...the mouth could have been wide open in a scream. Still a fab composition
though. Well done.

I'm going to judge your photos together, and I want to compare them to each other to make my critique more useful to you, as I think I have
the same compliments and criticisms for them both.
The one thing that I do not like about these is that I think they are boring. Well executed, yes. The shading is amazing, crisp, contrasted, and the
colours in your second shot are super. However, I think creativity didn't take much of a role in your pictures. For the first, I think it look too
much like a TV cameraman than a robot. The hands really don't help, and there is NOT enough robotic factors to really imply a robot. For the second, I
like your play with perspective, however, there's not enough going on to make this an interesting picture. Your model even looks like she's smiling to
me, even though the blood and tears are really amazing (they're so good). The shackles and freaky guy in the back are all that there is to interact
with, and there's isn't any background interaction in this. I stressed the background for a reason, and I really wanted you guys to play with your
backgrounds, take things that your model would be on top of, be a part of. A hall is very scary, but it's not good for this round. I think the one
thing you've tripped up with for a good time is an interesting picture, one that tells us a good, interactive story, for that's what a picture is. You
have all the right skills, and I really hoped that I had pushed you enough to make some really sparking pictures, but these aren't fascinating to me.
I think your technical factors are amazing, maybe the best of you three finalists, and you have an amazing sense of placement. You're extremely
talented, and these are two good and maybe even great photos, but they're not your best.

Hmm I really expected something more from this picture Vero. Besides the armpits and the headset you didn’t add much robotic touches. I would have
loved to see more technical stuff on her face or arms. I do like the way you posed her arms which draw my attention to your models face. Her hands are
so well drawn and your shading looks very nice. I think that adding more robotic details or maybe even using another model could have worked a lot
better. You weren’t allowed to use lots of expression but with the other two contestants I still get a strong feeling from their models faces. I know
you could have done a lot better and it’s a shame that you gave us such a flat note for this part.
WOW this is absolutely spectacular! I feel like I’m in the middle of the action and I can actually see the fear in her eyes. That guy in the back
really gives me the creeps! You’ve positioned everything so well: the girl, her hand, her face, the walls that lead my eyes to that scary guy. The
background looks amazing! I love the chains on the wall and all the blood stains, the background itself already tells me a story. And the girl she’s
so full of detail and expression. Those tears and that blood look really realistic and your shading is incredible. You’ve really outdone yourself for
this part Vero!

WINNER
Who will be the winner of eXHIBITION2?
The winner was decided based on your final scores, which we provided you with, as well as discussion. And now we find out who the winner is of
eXHIBITION2. You all proved to be the best out of everyone else, and I was so happy to see three different, unique styles brought together for a final
showing.
Vero, you ended with a final score of 739. Some judges adored your second final picture, but we ALL agreed the first was very weak. We admire your
beautiful execution skills, and you always have mostly flawless shading and composition. However, we found you to be inconsistent, and your pictures
seem to lack something. You have grown a lot since the start of this competition, and you have a very beautiful portfolio to show for it.
I’m sorry, you’re not the winner of eXHIBITION2. I was so happy to have you here, and your work does speak for itself. It’s beautiful, smooth, and
glamorous. We just needed a bit more substance.
Katie, you ended with a final score of 800. You are the true master of colour, each round you dazzled us. You started strong and ended strong, with
one or two missteps along the way, but you have a solid, beautiful, and excellent portfolio. I am personally one of your biggest fans, and I think you
have exceptional talent. The movie still picture you did is simply one of my most favorite shots. Your final score is very strong, and we all rated
you high in almost every category.
Kaitlyn, you ended with a final score of 808. There is no doubt that out of everyone you have the most signature style. You described it to me in
applications, “a pound of blood, a pound of glitter and a pound of supernatural fantasy whimsical fuckery surrealism.” You stayed true to that every
time, and while sometimes I wished you had maybe stretched yourself a tiny bit more, you failed to give us ONE weak picture. Everything was strong,
everything we liked.
So we’ve narrowed it down to Kaitlyn and Katie. You both have proven to be very creative, smart, and incredibly talented. Your scores are close, only
eight points apart, and you both have distinct styles. Katie, you bring something fresh and enlightening. Kaitlyn, you bring something dark and
whimsical. So who is the winner of eXHIBITION2?
I EVEN MADE A .GIF FOR THIS!
congratulations...
CONGRATULATIONS! You are the winner of eXHIBITION2!
I had SO much fun hosting this contest. It was a pleasure seeing all of you sweat under my deadlines and my wacked out round!
In all seriousness, this has been a joy. I hope you had fun because I had tons. What's more rewarding than a fun contest?
EL FIN!!!!
and if you just scrolled straight down, what the hell man.

Finally OO I'm soo nervous but also excited, I love the idea of

ahhhhhhh so awesome!!!
i'm just gonna say though i'll try my best to like time management but i'm taking printmaking right now for a summer course and it's basic printmaking
overview course and these due dates are all like around last week of class when all our projects will be due (we're going to work on all of them at
once and allot time to ourselves as necessary for things that are harder or easier to accomplish)
so yeah, i maaay or may not need an extension come time but i may get tired of carving into wood and metal and want to take a break and can work then.
But yeaaaaaaaah.

I have a question *feels stupid*
when you say the background has to be ours, are we still allowed to take parts from stock photos, use textures etc?

no question is stupid
you can use textures and stock photos, but you must extract individual things from them, you cannot take an entire stock photo or a large chunk of one
and say it's yours. i'd really love for all of you to draw your background, since that is 100% your own thing, but it's cool if you don't want to or
can't, just make sure you're piecing it all yourself.
hope that clarifies things

I need to be able to see the background first, before you start on the model, so I can approve it. So if you send it in to me to check, I'll OK it
then you'll be set to start work on your full pic.

Giving you an update:
I've been working on mine for the past week. It's almost done, I'm just having a hard time with some things. I will hopefully be able to turn it in
tomorrow after school

thanks katie, got it
these look amazing, guys.
Btw, here are some more examples for the second part.
Hope they help!

You can see the backgrounds are very drawn, very illustrated, rather than an actual photograph. Incorporate this idea into your backgrounds, and
notice the scary, cemetery, almost macabre scenes you could choose. It's up to you!
